Who we are looking for 

The Counsellor will provide trauma informed counselling, family therapy, groupwork, support and referrals for children, young people and adults who have experienced childhood sexual abuse, recently or historically, and/or young people displaying harmful sexual behaviours. The purpose is to assist with well-being and resilience, reduce the likelihood of re-traumatisation, and encourage sustained post-traumatic growth and recovery. The Counsellor provides a collaborative and integrated response across all RASA services to meet the individual needs of survivors

To be successful in this role you will have: 

  • Tertiary qualification (AQF level 7) in social work, psychology, counselling or related discipline or a diploma (AQF level 5) in counselling.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing counselling to those effected by childhood trauma, including child sexual abuse.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the support and trauma recovery needs of people who are survivors of child sexual abuse.

It would be a bonus if you have: 

  • Post graduate qualification (AQF level 9 and above) in social work, psychology, counselling or related discipline.
  • Experience in holistic child and family centred work.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal communities, families and services.

 

What you will be doing  

  • Provide specialised trauma-informed counselling, family therapy, groups and comprehensive support and referrals that respond to the specific needs of survivors including children, young people, adults and their families / support people.
  • Provide specialised trauma informed counselling to young people displaying harmful sexual behaviours and work with their school to support the young person.
  • Collaborate with appropriate social and practical support services, both internally at RASA and externally regarding housing, health, mental health, culture, financial, education, disability and aged care in order to meet the critical needs of each individual.
  • Ensure client safety, effective case planning, review and appropriate referral through universal holistic screening and risk assessment of complex relationship and social issues utilising as a minimum, the Detection of Overall Risk Screen (DOORS) tool and Kessler 10 assessment.
  • Ensure sound clinical interventions using evidence based therapeutic methodologies and proactively engaging in supervision to clearly articulate the relationship between theory and practice.
